Lottery Heritage Fund development award for Haverfordwest Castle

Craigmyle Fundraising Consultants are delighted that our client Pembrokeshire County Council and community partner Haverfordwest Castle CIO have received initial support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) for their project, Haverfordwest Castle: Pembrokeshire’s Heritage Gateway.

Our involvement in this exciting project began in early 2021, when we worked with Pembrokeshire County Council, project team and other partners to develop a major application within Round 1 of the Levelling Up Fund, which resulted in the award of a £17.7m grant.

Fundraising efforts continued, with Craigmyle consultants Dr Joel Burden and Alison Giles supporting the preparation of a NLHF application. Earlier this year, the development phase application was submitted in the first funding round under the NLHF’s new 10-year strategy. Development funding of £368,525 has recently been awarded to help progress plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant next year to deliver the scheme.

Mike Cavanagh, Head of Cultural, Leisure, Tourism and Registration Services at Pembrokeshire County Council commented:

Craigmyle worked with us throughout the process of putting together the stage 1 NLHF application. I have found them to be professional, personable, highly knowledgeable, and effective, as demonstrated by our success.

This heritage partnership project aims to revitalise the Grade II Listed County Gaol building at the heart of the site, transforming it into a cutting-edge interactive discovery centre that showcases Pembrokeshire’s history and explores its future in an engaging, immersive experience.

In addition to restoration of the Old Gaol, the initiative will include a complete renovation and reinterpretation of the Haverfordwest Town Museum, which is located in the neighboring Governor’s House. There will also be new outdoor interpretation features in the castle, alongside a refreshed brand, website, and marketing strategy. A comprehensive activities, events, and education programme is in development, with pilot workshops and public focus groups set to begin in autumn 2024 to guide its direction. The project will also offer a range of volunteer roles and work experience opportunities for community involvement.
