It’s that time of year again. The out-of-office is on, the sun cream is packed and, somehow, the donor database is still open in a browser tab.
For those working in a charity, faith organisation or school, switching off does not always come naturally. So here is our entirely unofficial guide to enjoying a proper summer break.
What not to do
- Don’t refresh JustGiving from your sun lounger ‘just to see how the summer appeal is doing’. It will still be there after your ice cream.
- Don’t arrange a ‘quick chat with the Chair’. There is no such thing as a quick chat is there? You know this.
- Don’t ask the family next to you on the beach whether they have considered leaving a gift in their will. Even if they do look like excellent prospects.
- Don’t draft the autumn appeal in your head while snorkelling. Your brain may try but let the idea float gently back out to sea.
- And definitely don’t photograph an interesting fundraising poster “for future reference”. You are on holiday. Step away from the QR code.
Beach reads, sorted
We recommend a ‘one-in, one-out’ rule: one fundraising book and one completely frivolous novel.
For the fundraising book, try The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit, which is fittingly about avoiding burnout; anything by Ken Burnett. Try The Zen of Fundraising. 89 punchy ideas you can dip in and out of; or Asking by Jerold Panas. It’s short enough to finish during a delayed flight.
You could also organise a cheeky ‘beach-read swap’ with a colleague when you’re back. It may just be the world’s most niche book club.
Switching off properly
Tell people you are going away. Turn on your out-of-office, but spare everyone the usual corporate blurb. Give them something cheerful to read while you are off.
Then give your phone a well-earned holiday too. Switch it off and put it in a drawer. The laptop should stay at home too. It does not need a change of scenery.
Your work brain may take a few days to unwind. This is quite normal. Sunshine, sleep and the occasional cold beer should help. You’ll get there.
Family time or simply your time
Quality time is one of the few major gifts that cannot be automated, delegated or produced from a template. It’s essential. It helps you recharge, reconnect and return to work with more energy and perspective.
So this summer, be your own major donor. Give yourself some proper time off and do not ask for anything in return.
Craigmyle on holiday
Everyone at Craigmyle will be taking some much-needed time off over the summer. We have staggered our holidays, so at least one member of the team will still be around should you need us.
You can contact us at first@craigmyle.org.uk or call 01582 762441.
Enjoy your summer holiday, and please resist the urge to prospect the people beside the pool.
