Southwark Council and Friends of Nunhead Cemetery

Historic building surrounded by trees and a pathway.

Following the successful NLHF Round 1 Development funding The Friends of Nunhead Cemetery in partnership with Southwark Council secured their development grant of £108,294 as part of their £2.9m Heritage Lottery bid. The client is restoring a Victorian Gate Lodge at the cemetery’s entrance (currently a ruin) and turning it into a community hub plus café. The cemetery is one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries established in London between 1832 and 1841. The ecological significance of the cemetery’s is reflected in its status as local Nature Reserve and Metropolitan Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. The project’s wide-ranging volunteering opportunities and activity plans will benefit local communities in this multi-cultural but deprived part of South London. Our consultants were given just six months to move the project into the Delivery Phase to unlock the remaining £2.8m NLHF Delivery grant. £1,25m partnership funding came from Southwark Green fund, the Council’s own Section 106 funds, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Pilgrim Trust and Historic England
